What makes Gollum compelling as a supporting character fades when he takes the spotlight, the back-and-forth between his personalities grating. Yet The Lord Of The Rings: Gollum pales in comparison to the works it tries to imitate, missing the mark in almost every way. Daedalic Entertainment clearly feels similarly, having recruited actor Wayne Forester to do a serviceable Andy Serkis impersonation while rooting his character in Tolkien’s love for riddles. How do you approach depicting one of fantasy literature’s most iconic characters? It’s nearimpossible to separate our image of Gollum from his previous incarnations, whether as a scheming riddler in Tolkien’s books or as a sympathetic monster in the films of Peter Jackson.
